Memory Assessments

Dementia is an ongoing decline in brain functioning, and there are many different causes of dementia.

It can result in:

• Memory loss
• Reduced mental sharpness and speed of thought
• Language problems
• Problem solving
• Reduced understanding and limited use of language
• Mood swings
• Reduced or erratic movement

People with dementia often lose interest in their usual activities or may have problems controlling their emotions. Their personality may change and they often find it difficult to socialise or deal with social situations. In some instances people can lose empathy and start hallucinating.

As the syndrome starts to worsen, people lose the ability to remember events or understand their environments or situations. Their independence starts to deteriorate as planning and organising themselves become more challenging.

There are around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia.

How we can help

If you are concerned about your or a family member’s memory then we can help to provide quick access to effective diagnostic assessment within six weeks.

We accept NHS or privately funded referrals and encourage you to speak to your GP about your desire to have an assessment at St Andrew’s Therapy.

Our memory assessment clinic offers:

  • A comprehensive memory assessment
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scan at BMI Three Shires hospital
  • Diagnosis
  • Expert intervention from an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Information and support following diagnosis

We offer a combined assessment with an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and MRI brain scan in one two-and-a-half-hour appointment. This will happen within three weeks of your referral.

You will then be invited back to discuss your results with your Consultant. We will offer a diagnosis and provide the information you need whatever the outcome. We will also inform your GP of any outcome, aiding your ongoing healthcare needs.

We also offer talking therapies and counselling, which may help someone come to terms with their diagnosis and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) if a person develops depression or anxiety.
